Esther and her family lived in eastern Poland. This region was later, in 1939, occupied by the Soviet Red Army. Red Army representatives, or NKVD, asked people in this occupied area where they wanted to live. If the respondents said USA or Palestine, they were deported via train to Siberia as punishment. At this location there was minimal food and fresh water. All adults and teenagers had to work in cold harsh conditions. This, however, surprisingly, proved to be a blessing. Almost all Jewish adults who remained in my Polish town were liquidated.
